Thousands of people around the world have to depend on a donation of blood just for the fact that tragic happens and people need a transfer of blood. I have been around blood all my life. I’m not just saying that because I mean our bodies happens to be the container that holds the liquid of blood. What I truly mean is my mother has been a Phlebotomists ever since I was born, which was seventeen years ago, so I been around the substance all my life. I understand the importance of donating blood because knowing that I can have a chance to save someone, who I have never met before, makes me feel like I can help change the world for the better.
I remember the first time I donated which was on a Friday the thirteenth, which if you believe in superstitions imagine the fear that went through my head. My dream is to help another person someway or somehow so when I took this opportunity I knew that when I start something I have to finish it. Not only did it freaked me out that it was the Friday the thirteenth, is I have a problem with seeing my own blood. My thoughts kept screaming “you’re going to save a life!”, so I turned my head and my mom kept talking to me so I wouldn’t look at my blood streaming through the tubes. When I got finished I had the biggest smile that happened to hurt my face. I told my mom, “I hope my blood can be a better use to someone else other than me.” Along time ago as a child I did not know the real importance I could make by donating a pint of my blood. Now understanding with disasters happening either it’s caused by people or nature and for the one’s who are affected by it, which they will need all kinds of help that they can possibly receive.
It’s legitimately very sad when people can not get the comprehension that donating blood is very important. A friend of mine and her father were talking about how he goes to donate his plasma and get so much money for it and that my friend could not do it yet because she has to be a certain age. Well as the person that I am, I told her, “Hey, you can go donate blood because you’re over sixteen and meet the weight criteria.” I’m thinking she will say oh yeah I would like to do that, instead of a nice response out of the both of them, I get one that makes me want to vomit. “Why would you want to do that? You don’t get paid by doing that.” I hold my tongue because what I really wanted to do was go off on them, but knowing what my mom would say I did not snap back at such an evil statement. It’s very depressing that people could not think twice about money but they can with donating blood, especially with Texas Blood Institute making announcements that they are needing more people to donate.
Donating anything from the human body that is healthy could be the most happiest donation to other human. Money should not matter when it comes down to actually have the opportunity to help someone save another human being from the worst situations. The saying “Lives matter” is very accurate, I say this because when it comes down to blood it does not have a certain ‘skin color’ to be able to enter. This is how I see that donating blood is important; people who are in the army, that became a doctor, trained to become a policeman or firefighter. They are all trying to reach the same goal which is to save another person’s life. Donors they might not fight in combat or know how to do a heart transplant, but at least they are saving lives a different way.
Anyone can be a hero just by simply donating and not have to be one of the people who only donates for the money. I can honestly say proudly that I’m a donor and can be a hero! Blood can be one of the weirdest things, but can be the most important key to help another person out. So I would deeply encourage donating because the feeling afterwards, knowing that your blood can save a life, is a feeling I could not describe.
